REST OF EUROPE WHITE

Our Pinot Grigio is a single vineyard wine from a very respected producer and has far more character than is often the case with this grape variety, delicate floral aromas are complemented by delicate apricot and almond flavours on the palate. Schloss Schonborn is one of Germany’s oldest and best estates, making outstanding, racey Riesling. Gavi is the top white wine of Piedmont and shows a touch more weight than the Pinot Grigio and richer, peachy fruit.

REST OF EUROPE RED

Both Riojas are produced by Bodegas Alavesas in the heart of the regions prime vineyard area. The Joven is lightly oaked and fruit driven, whilst the Reserva is considerably more complex having spent 12 months in oak. Montepulciano produces one of Italy’s most approachable, lightly cherry fruited reds, the Chianti is made in a traditional style with evolved fruitcake flavours and mellow oak influences.

NEW WORLD WHITE

Much of the New World’s obsession with huge flavours and excessive oak is now, thankfully, a thing of the past… complexity and balance, as well as regional identity are now to the fore. The Semillon in Cranswick’s blend helps to balance out the lightly oaked Chardonnay and makes for very easy drinking. The Old Vines estate in South Africa specializes in the Chenin grape and makes one of the Cape’s best examples with delicate pear fruit and crunchy acidity. New Zealand continues to shine with its outstanding Marlborough Sauvignons and the Crossroads Riesling from Hawkes Bay shows that they have great potential for this variety.

NEW WORLD RED

Argentina has had tremendous success with its Malbecs and Chamuyos is rich with brambly fruit and medium to fuller bodied. The Breed River area is one of the Cape’s most arid regions and Bainskloof Merlot is a ripe damson and cassis flavoured wine. Simon Hackett is responsible for the Gatekeeper Shiraz which is powerful but well balanced with rich, spiced fruit compote flavours. Eradus Pinot Noir comes from the warmer Awaterre Valley portion of Marlborough. This is an exquisite, complex wine with sweet morello cherry and dark raspberry fruit seasoned with a touch of oak.

FRENCH WHITE

Our Viognier is a delicious, light, floral scented wine with delicate peach fruit from a small domaine in the South of France. Domaine de Nozay in the Loire Valley sits close to the town of Chavignol, overlooking the river and produces a fragrant, minerally Sancerre from its long established vineyards. Both the Chablis and Chassagne are Burgundian classics. Olivier Leflaive’s Chablis is refined, with complex citrus and orchard fruit and no oak, the Chassagne is weightier with lemon curd complemented by toasted nut and vanilla notes on the finish… very fine.

FRENCH RED

Domaine de la Jonction Syrah is a pretty wine made in a light to medium bodied style and a complete contrast to Australia’s sappy Shiraz. Our Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux is the second wine of this appellations top Chateau and is a great example of what all good, affordable Claret should aspire to. In Beaujolais, Marcel Joubert has some of the oldest vineyards and the resulting wines have an extra dimension and complexity to them. 2005 was a wonderful vintage in the sourthern Rhone and the Grenache dominated Chateauneuf has depth of plum and currant fruit, and is wonderfully balanced. The wines of Gevrey Chambertin continue to stand out as one of the most consistent high achievers.

ROSE

Cabernet Sauvignon’s small berry makes for a full flavoured rose with leafy, cassis fruit. The Montauberon is a lighter salmon pink with delicate strawberry fruit and vanilla crème notes. The Sancerre Rose comes from a small parcel of old vine Pinot Noir and is a refined, elegant wine with delicious red berry fruit.

CHAMPAGNE & SPARKLING

No other wine region can challenge Champagne’s claim to produce the World’s greatest spakling wine and the very best competitors are just as expensive. Delamotte’s wines are outstanding and benefit from Champagne Salon’s (Champagne’s rarest and most expensive Blanc de Blancs only made in declared vintages) fruit in non vintage years. They are a delight and punch well above their weight. Some of the better Grande Marque’s complete our list.
